Coat Types & Maintenance Expectations
You may hear the terms Wooly, Plush, or Standard Coats.
What do these mean in terms of looks, and more importantly maintenance, for a pet owner?
Pomskies have a double-coat, with a dense soft undercoat and a top coat of straight guard hairs. These coats protect the sensitive skin in both hot and cold weather, acting as an insulating layer.

Wooly Coated Pomsky:
Although the Wooly coated Pomsky requires more brushing, the coat is relatively low maintenance. Wooly coats have also been reported as shedding less than the other types. The addition of the American Eskimo into some lines have also had great feedback from breeders and owners regarding increased silky coat texture, and decreased shedding.
These coats are very dense with the hairs averaging 3” or more in most instances in the adult version. Puppies through young adulthood can show a variety of textures as the puppy coat falls out and the adult coat comes in. They appear on the Embark test as “"TT”.
Grooming requirements: This coat length requires brushing several times a week. As well as a sanitary trim around the rear at least once every 2-3 months to keep it free from feces. When taking to the groomer, get a de-shed shampoo and blow out. Trimming would be sanitary trim, buttskirt shaping, paw pads, “light shaping” only just to catch those scragglier hairs.

Plush Coated Pomsky:
This coat requires less maintenance but still has the thicker texture that many love. They have average to be expected shedding for a Husky x Pomeranian mix - which is a LOT. The plush coat generally is 1-2.5” and has the same density as a wooley coat but not the length. It can be a similar length as the standard coat but has a fluffier texture, longer hairs on the tail, longer on the ears, head and legs. The Embark code is “GT”.
Grooming Requirements: Brushing is still required a couple times a week. Watch for mats in the softer fur behind the ears or at the armpits. When taking to the groomer, ask for the deshed shampoo and blow out, sanitary trim (if needed), buttskirt shaping (if needed) and paw pad trim. It’s rare that they will need any additional trimming.
Standard Coated Pomsky:
This coat is considerably less maintenance. Many breeders report that the standard coat sheds more in the individual hairs, rather than in the clumps of the other coat types. The coat length is less than 1”, kept fairly tight to the body and very dense. The Embark code is “GG”.
Grooming Requirements: Brushing is still required at least once a week. Watch for mats in the softer fur behind the ears or at the armpits. When taking to the groomer, ask for the deshed shampoo and blow out, sanitary trim (if needed). It’s rare that they will need any additional trimming.
